Kawale Hails Chipala Poultry Farms as a Beacon of Private-Sector-Led Agricultural Transformation:

Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale has commended Chipala Poultry Farms in Lilongwe as a standout example of how private sector innovation can power Malawi’s agricultural and economic transformation.

During a recent tour of the farm’s facilities in Nsalu and Chitedze, Kawale praised the enterprise for embodying President Lazarus Chakwera’s Mega Farms vision, highlighting it as tangible proof that large-scale, modern farming is not just a dream—but a thriving reality.

“This is more than a poultry operation—it’s a powerful demonstration of what can happen when the private sector is given the tools to lead,” Kawale stated. “Chipala Poultry Farms shows that the Mega Farms initiative is alive and delivering real results.”

Founded and run by the enterprising Chipala brothers, the farm is home to over 80,000 chickens and has successfully expanded into horticulture. By using nutrient-rich poultry manure, the farm grows organic vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, bell peppers, cabbage, and cauliflower—maximizing sustainability while minimizing waste. Kawale noted that such resource optimization underscores how innovation and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.

Director Mwachumu Chipala shared that the business secured a K500 million loan from the Mega Farms Support Unit to accelerate its modernization. The funding is being used to install advanced battery cages with automatic drinking systems—improving hygiene, productivity, and egg quality.

“Our Nsalu farm is currently undergoing a full upgrade,” said Chipala. “We’re investing in cutting-edge infrastructure to boost efficiency and quality.”

The farm also plans to install a 20-ton-per-day feed mill, enabling it to supply high-quality feed both for its own use and for other farmers. Already, the Nsalu site produces about 1,200 trays of eggs daily, carefully sorted into quality grades for the market.

Looking ahead, Chipala Farms is eyeing regional exports, with Mozambique and Zambia as key targets. With its bold vision and sustainable practices, the farm isn’t just nourishing the nation—it’s positioning Malawi as a serious contender in the regional agri-business arena.
